Glenn Maxwell named vice-captain of Australia A

The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel have selected two 14-player squads for the Australia A tour to South Africa in July.

Victorians Glenn Maxwell and Chris Tremain have been named in the four-day squad, with Maxwell to be vice-captain of the side under Queensland batsman Usman Khawaja.

Maxwell recently captained IPL side King’s XI Punjab, and thrived with the added responsibility scoring 310 runs at an explosive strike-rate of 173.18.

Tremain has also been named in the one-day squad alongside fellow Victorians Scott Boland and Marcus Stoinis.

All four also featured in last year’s winter Australia A series, however a fractured right-hand ended Boland’s campaign early.

Dominant displays from Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis and Chris Tremain in last year’s tri-series also helped propel them into Australian squads over the summer.

National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “We have opted for a well-balanced squad featuring some experience blended with younger players, with an emphasis on building our depth for the future.

“This is a great chance for these players to experience foreign conditions against a quality international sides and really test their skills.

“With an upcoming Test Series in South Africa early next year it is also an opportunity to impress with their performances and put their names forward for consideration.”

On selecting Maxwell as vice-captain, Hohns said:

“He [Khawaja] will gel nicely with Glenn who recently had some captaincy experience in the IPL and we believe will respond well to this extra responsibility.”

The team will play two four-day matches against South Africa A before participating in a one-day tri-series with South Africa A and India A.

The squad will depart for South Africa on July 8.
