The Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers have announced their 14-man squad for the upcoming Matador BBQs One-Day Cup beginning early next month.
Victoria’s team features a healthy mix of youth and experience, which will keep the side in good stead heading into the month-long tournament.
Young wicket-keeper batsman Peter Handscomb will captain the side for the first time in the 50-over format with Matthew Wade away on Australian duties.
Handscomb returns to the Bushrangers squad following a productive tour with the Australia A side where he captained in the four-day format and scored two centuries.
Marcus Stoinis also returns to the squad following a strong all-round performance for Australia A, hitting a century of his own as well as picking up regular wickets during the recent Quadrangular A series.
Victorian Chairman of Selectors Andrew Lynch said the squad was well-placed heading into the start of the domestic season.
“It’s another great opportunity for Peter to lead a team in a big tournament. His experience captaining the Australia A side has been invaluable and I know he’s looking forward to the next month,” Lynch said.
Due to several of Victoria’s frontline pace bowlers recovering from injury or on international duties, Lynch has looked to youthful spearheads Jackson Coleman and Matt Doric to step up.
“Coleman and Doric have shown promising form in both Premier Cricket and Pathway competitions, and will help fill the roles left by our frontline pace attack currently missing through injury and overseas commitments,” said Lynch.
“Add to that a solid mix of young all-rounders, as well as experienced campaigners like Glenn Maxwell, Cameron White, Bobby Quiney and Dan Christian, and we’re set for a really positive month of cricket.”
Michael Beer is another new addition to the squad, who adds an extra dimension to the spin attack that faired well during the Matador Cup last year.
“Beer comes in as a seasoned campaigner, and will really add depth to our spin attack led by Fawad Ahmed and Jon Holland,” Lynch said.
“To have those three as well as part-timers Maxwell and White is incredibly beneficial, and leaves us with plenty of options next month.”
Emerging batsman Marcus Harris has been named in the squad after representing the Cricket Australia XI at last year’s Matador Cup, the first time the team took part in the tournament.
The squad departs next Monday, September 26 for practice matches in Perth ahead of the first fixture on October 5 against last year’s runners-up South Australia.
