Bushrangers' First Practice Match
The Victorian Bushrangers played their first practice match of the season yesterday at Wesley College.
The match, between a Hussey XI and a White XI, was played between available squad members and invitees from Premier Cricket.
The White XI batted first and the dynamic opening pair of Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade took off from where they left last season - when they averaged 58 for the opening wicket. They combined for a 155-run partnership from just 117 balls before Finch (82 from 62) was dismissed. Wade brought up his century in 78 deliveries before he retired.
Bushrangers' skipper Cameron White kept the scoreboard ticking over, hitting 57 (82) before a late flourish from Jayde Herrick 45 (22) propelled the final score to 6-344. Brad Hodge was the pick of the bowlers with 2-19 from five overs.
Prahran off-spinner Daniel Salpietro opened the bowling for the White XI in the second innings with success, claiming 2-32 from seven overs. The Hussey XI was under pressure their whole innings with Scott Boland (2-43), Andrew McDonald (2-15) and Cameron White (2-27) taking regular wickets. The Hussey XI was dismissed for 146, falling 198 runs short.
Bushranger veterans Brad Hodge (38 from 56) and David Hussey (36 from 34) spent some quality time in the middle with a 64-run partnership while former NSW player Simon Keen, who has signed with Carlton for the 2011-12 season, was unbeaten at the end of the innings on 25.
Victorian assistant coach Simon Helmot was pleased with the Bushrangers' first hit-out. "After being unable to play last week due to inclement weather, it was great to get out on the field again."
"We are building up to our first Ryobi One-Day Cup match on October 9. We have another set of trial matches on the weekend before we head off to Mooloolaba next week where we have a pre-season camp and our first Futures League match", Helmot said.
"I encourage all Bushrangers fans to come to Wesley College on Saturday and Sunday to watch the boys have a hit."
The match on Saturday begins at 10am at Wesley College, Glen Waverley Campus.
