Fast bowlers blast Vics to Futures win
Victoria has claimed a comfortable seven-wicket victory inside three days in its Futures League match against Western Australia at Murdoch University.
After dismissing WA for 166 in their second innings, the Victorians were set 98 for victory, a total that never looked like troubling them with Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers Brett Forsyth (46) and Alex Keath (23*) receiving help from Under-19 state captain Meyrick Buchanan (21*).
Resuming the day at 3-70, Louis Cameron (5-29) immediately picked up his third wicket for the innings, trapping Scollay in front for 31.
WA appeared to be on target to set the Victorians a reasonable chase when they moved to 4-128 but Melbourne paceman Daniel Worrall (3-26) was able to remove the batsmen in quick succession.
The tail offered little resistance as Cameron returned to the attack to claim his first five-wicket haul in the Futures League.
Spinner Daniel Salpietro (1-20) also got amongst the wickets as the last four batters fell for just 10 runs.
Victoria lost David King (six) and Michael Hill (0) early in their chase but Forsyth, Keath and Buchanan ensured there was no late West Australian fightback.
Victorian coach Shawn Flegler identified yesterday's first session as instrumental in the side's win.
"The wicket would have really deteriorated by a fourth day and chasing anything over 150 would have been tough so we spoke about how important the first session was before play," Flegler said.
"Louie (Cameron) come out and bowled a great spell in the morning and from there we didn't look back.
"All three quicks, Louie, Worrall and Fekete bowled well in this match...it looks positive for the future of fast bowling in this state."
Victoria's next Futures League match begins next Monday against South Australia at Glenelg.
