Handscomb named for Shield debut
Victoria's Peter Handscomb will become the state's 829th first-class cricketer this morning after being named to make his Bupa Sheffield Shield debut against Queensland at the Gabba.
Having stroked an impressive 42 for the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers during Sunday's opening RYOBI One-Day Cup fixture, the 20-year-old has batted his way into the team through weight of numbers since returning from England in the off-season.
During his past four innings in all forms of the game, including a Futures League clash against Tasmania and a trial match for the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers, Handscomb has tallied 266 runs at 88.66 to warrant a berth in the line-up.
Emerging all-rounder Alex Keath has also been called into the team, while Peter Siddle spearheads a formidable pace quartet that for the first time in 10 months includes Clint McKay.
Left-arm spinner Jon Holland has been named 12th man.
"(Handscomb's) a very well balanced cricketer both technically and mentally," Victorian assistant coach Simon Helmot said.
"He has nimble feet to the spinners and he has an inner confidence which is critical to all successful cricketers.
"(His selection) is richly deserved."
Play will commence at the Gabba from 11am (AEDST) this morning, with McDonald winning the toss and electing to bowl.
