Victorian all-rounder John Hastings has capped off a breakthrough year with the DEC Bushrangers to be named Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year at the 2010 Allan Border Medal on Monday night. The 24-year-old was a clear winner polling 46 votes to claim the award from New South Wales leg-spinning all-rounder Steven Smith with 30 votes and Queensland fast bowler Ben Cutting on 18 votes. The powerful lower-order batsman and damaging fast-medium bowler played 17 games during the voting period scoring 324 runs and taking 49 wickets at the impressive average of 22.74. Hastings has been a star performer for the Bushrangers since being recruited from New South Wales and is a consistent member of the squad picked in all three forms of the game. Hastings becomes the eleventh player to win the award, following in the footsteps of the previous winners who have all gone on to represent Australia at the highest level in at least one format of the game. The Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award was open to any player who had not played more than 10 first-class matches and was under the age of 24 as at the start of the voting period, which commenced on 24 December 2008. Players were not allowed to vote for their state teammates. The voting period for the award included all Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield, Ford Ranger Cup, Australia A and Australian international matches from 24 December 2008 to 1 February 2010. The Bradman Young Player of the Year Award is presented in conjunction with the Bradman Foundation.
