Hill leads Futures side to first-innings points

Half centuries to Michael Hill and David King has helped Victoria secure first-innings points against Western Australia after day two of their Futures League match at Murdoch University.

Resuming at 1-25, in reply to WA's total of 159, with Hill on 12 and King on 9, the pair managed to negotiate the first hour of the day on a tough pitch then accelerated the scoring rate in the hour before lunch.

Hill, who is playing only his second match for Victoria this season after sustaining a pre-season ankle injury, brought up his half-century with a six as his guided his team to the lunch break at 1-122.

Hill was dismissed immediately after the break for 72 but King combined with captain Alex Keath (36) to pass the Western Australian total.

King (54) was trapped in front by Ryan Duffield shortly after reaching his milestone and this triggered a collapse for the Victorians which saw them lose 4-19.

A 27-run partnership between Clive Rose (12) and Dylan Kight (14) briefly steadied the innings before they lost another 4-13 to be bowled out for 227, a lead of 68.

Essendon paceman Louis Cameron (2-17) took two wickets earlier in the WA's second innings as Victoria maintained control of the match.

It was again Daniel Worrall (1-13) who picked up the important scalp of Travis Birt as WA went to stumps at 3-70 with a lead of two runs.

Victorian coach Shawn Flegler said his side was unable to deliver that killer blow.

"It was a tough wicket to get in on and we lost several clumps of wickets," Flegler said.

"Hill and King batted well before lunch with Hilly a bit more fluent but that partnership was critical in us getting a lead."

Flegler was happy with his side's performance in the final session.

"We picked up the three key wickets with Louie (Cameron) bowling really well and Worrall managed to get Birt again.

Play will resume at 1.30pm.
