Holland receives ODI call up

Jon Holland's remarkable turn in form has been rewarded with a call-up to the Australian one-day side as cover for Xavier Doherty in today's Commonwealth Bank Series match against Sri Lanka in Sydney.

Doherty suffered back spasms in yesterday's training session and a decision on his availability will be made prior to the match.

If Holland plays he will become the 194th player to represent Australia in one-day cricket and also the ninth Commonwealth Bank Bushranger, after Aaron Finch, John Hastings, David Hussey, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Matthew Wade and Cameron White to play for the national side in the past 12 months.

After being left out of the Victorian one-day side in early December, Holland received a late-minute call up to the Chairman's XI side against India in Canberra where he stunned the tourists with a haul of 6-70.

Despite sitting out of the entire KFC T20 Big Bash League tournament, the left-arm spinner continued his form where he claimed a career-best match total of 7-117 against South Australia in a Bupa Sheffield Shield match.

His name was thrown into the spotlight when he delivered a mesmerising spell of 6-29 against the Redbacks last week in a RYOBI One-Day Cup fixture.

Since the Chairman's XI match, Holland has grabbed 25 wickets at an average of 16.1 with Victoria and his Premier side Frankston-Peninsula.

Australian coach and National Selection Panel member Mickey Arthur said:

"While Xavier Doherty's injury is not deemed as being serious it is important we have capable cover in Sydney for tomorrow's match. Jon has been bowling well for Victoria across all formats in recent weeks and we feel should he be required he will perform with distinction."

Australia will meet Sri Lanka at the SCG from 2.20pm.
