Maxi to bide his time
Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will have to bide his time to make his Test debut after being named 12th man at the SCG tomorrow.
Having been drafted into the Australian squad to replace the injured Shane Watson, the 24-year-old was widely expected to be handed a Baggy Green, but was left out this morning when the Australian side was announced.
Instead, Michael Clarke's outfit will field four quicks, as well as frontline spinner Nathan Lyon, with Matthew Wade expected to slide one place up the order to number six.
With the SCG wicket boasting strong coverage, Clarke said the pitch had assisted with team selection.
"A fair bit of grass on the wicket, the boys bowled really well in the last Test match," Clarke said.
"And bringing Mitchell Starc back into the team obviously helps our attack, especially with the form he's in.
"Mitchell Johnson's batting, he's batting as well as an all-rounder now anyway.
"I'm confident we've got enough batting still with Matthew Wade at six and Mitchell Johnson at seven and we've got extra bowling which is a real positive for us."
Since making his first-class debut last year, Maxwell has averaged 42 from 15 matches including a ton and eight half- centuries, while also snaring 27 wickets at 33.81 with his handy off-spin.
Maxwell hammered 91 for the Chairman's XI against the Sri Lankans in a tour match in Canberra earlier this month, fresh off notching 64 for Australia A against South Africa at the SCG.
