Maxwell named in Chairmans XI
Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will press his Test claims after winning inclusion in the three-day Chairman's XI to face Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval next week.
Having carried Australia A's spinning duties against South Africa at the SCG earlier this month, the 24-year-old will again be hoping to impress with a middle order position up for grabs in the Australian side following Ricky Ponting's retirement in Perth.
Queensland recruit Usman Khawaja will captain an outfit that includes fellow Test hopeful Alex Doolan.
"It is a talented team that has an ideal mix of youth and experience," Australian chairman of selectors John Inverarity said.
"Usman Khawaja has been nominated as captain. He, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Doolan and Scott Henry have been released from their BBL franchises to take this opportunity to further their experience in the longer form of the game.
"They are players who have shown some excellent form in recent months and will be looking to enhance their claims for higher honours."
With the quest for a Baggy Green up for grabs, both Maxwell and Doolan will be notable absentees for next week's Melbourne derby featuring the Stars and the Renegades at Etihad Stadium.
The Chairman's XI squad will convene in Canberra on Tuesday before the tour match is held from Thursday, December 6 to Saturday, December 8.
