Pattinson named man-of-the match

Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers firebrand James Pattinson has capped off a dream Test debut after being named man-of-the-match during Australia's nine-wicket victory over New Zealand at the Gabba.

Having claimed 1-64 in the first innings, capturing the prized scalp of Black Caps skipper Ross Taylor after he played on, the 21-year-old unleashed a withering performance in the second dig that all but single handedly destroyed the Kiwis.

Striking the first blow late last night, removing the dangerous Brendon McCullum for one, Pattinson returned this morning with the new ball, but no one could have envisoned what would take place.

In just his second over of the day, Pattinson claimed three wickets in four balls, narrowly missing a hat-trick, with Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Taylor failing to avoid the carnage.

Boasting figures of 4-1 at one point, Pattinson ultimately finished with 5-27 from 11 overs, eclipsing his previous best first-class haul of 4-52, which had come in Sheffield Shield match for Victoria.

"I had a bit of a shaky start to the match but I seemed to get rid of the nerves and bowl pretty well today," Pattinson said.

"To actually get a game, to get picked, and do well in it is just a bonus.

"I've been away with the team and been omitted a couple of times over in South Africa.

"So it's good to get that go and all that hard work has paid off for me."
