Stars get Scorched

The Melbourne Stars have been knocked out of the KFC T20 Big Bash League finals after succumbing to a red-hot Perth Scorchers outfit in front of a sold out crowd at the WACA.

Chasing 175 for victory, Commonwealth Bank Bushranger Rob Quiney (eight) wasted no time getting the Stars' chase underway smashing consecutive boundaries off ex-St Kilda teammate Michael Beer before falling to some sharp work from Scorchers keeper Luke Ronchi.

From there the Stars consolidated reaching 2-88 before a double wicket maiden in the 11th over saw the loss of English international Luke Wright (33 from 25) and in-form Bushrangers batsmen David Hussey the very next ball to rip the momentum from their innings.

After surviving the hat-trick ball, skipper Cameron White set about lifting the run-rate striking a huge maximum over wide long-on.

White couldn't repeat the dose, however, as he fell shortly after for 14 with the Stars needing  a further 67 runs from 32 deliveries.

It was then up to fellow Bushranger Matthew Wade (37 from 17) to try and pull off a remarkable victory and it seemed possible as the keeper-batsman cleared the fence three times in as many overs.

However, 27 runs from the final over proved too great a task as Wade holed out to long-on attempting to clear the rope once more.

The Stars finishing 8-163 from their 20 overs, 11 runs short of the target.

The loss concludes the Bushrangers involvement in the inaugural BBL season with a number of squad members littered throughout the leading stats getters for the tournament.

Bushrangers Aaron Finch (259 runs), Quiney (243) and Hussey (243) all finished inside the top-10 leading run getters, while Bushrangers quick Clint McKay finished inside the top-five leading wicket takers with 11 wickets in his eight matches.

The Perth Scorchers will take on the Sydney Sixers on Saturday in the BBL final to be played in Perth, with both sides also qualifying for the lucrative Champions League.
