The Tigers show bite
Victoria has slumped to a disappointing defeat during its opening Futures League fixture of the season after Tasmania ripped through its line-up to claim maximum points at Maroochydore today.
Having been scuttled for 242 in reply to the Tigers' impressive first innings total of 557, Victoria resumed proceedings at 0-140 in the second dig this morning and there was genuine optimism in the camp with opening pair Ryan Carters and Peter Handscomb seemingly in full control.
But the Tasmanians had other ideas as Sam Rainbird removed Carters with the eighth ball of the day for 88 after adding just five to his overnight score, sparking a collapse which reaped 7-8 in the space of 10 overs.
While Brenton McDonald (22) and Clive Rose (44) temporarily held the wolves at bay, Tasmania went for the jugular as they closed out proceedings to dismiss Victoria for 220 and claim victory by an innings and 95 runs.
Despite the setback, the Victorians will be able to take some solace from the loss, with Carters and Handscomb both coming into calculations for the Bushrangers' opening Sheffield Shield clash in a fortnight following today's announcement of the VB tour of South Africa.
First choice gloveman Matthew Wade has been called into the international arena, along with state teammates Aaron Finch, David Hussey, James Pattinson and Cameron White, paving the way for a new look Victorian line-up.
Victoria is scheduled to meet Queensland at the Gabba from October 11, while the Futures League team will next meet South Australia at Glenelg from October 31.
