Victoria take first-innings points

Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers are in the box seat, despite losing three late wickets, after dismissing Western Australia for 218 on day two of their Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.

James Pattinson (3-27) sent a timely reminder to national selectors that his talent should not be discounted and at one stage had the figures of 3-4.

At stumps in their second innings, Victoria are 3-60, a lead of 143 runs with Robert Quiney (27) and Jon Holland (4) at the crease.

Mitch Marsh showed why he is regarded as a future Australian all-rounder, taking the wickets of Chris Rogers (11), Aaron Finch (6) and David Hussey (7) late in the day.

Resuming at 2-6, Western Australia was quickly under pressure when Pattinson (3-27) claimed Wes Robinson for two.

With the score on 12, the Bushrangers were convinced they had picked up their third wicket when Robinson appeared to edge the ball through to Matthew Wade, the umpire disagreed, but two balls later, Pattinson picked up Robinson's wicket with an identical delivery.

When debutant Scott Boland (1-51) found the edge of Marcus North's bat with just his fourth delivery for Victoria, the Warriors had slumped to 4-26.

Despite an ambling run-up, Boland, 22, bowled with good pace during his opening spell.

In combination with Pattinson and Boland, Andrew McDonald (1-19) and Jayde Herrick (1-59) gave the Warriors' batsmen no width in the morning session and each went at less than 1.5 runs per over.

A consolidating partnership between Adam Voges (30) and Marcus Harris (39) saw Western Australia get to lunch four wickets down at 4-67.

McDonald claimed a well-deserved wicket after lunch when Harris was caught hooking on 39.

Glenn Maxwell (1-25) continued his good form with the ball when he trapped Voges in front to leave the Warriors 6-97 halfway through the day's play.

Off-spinner Jon Holland (2-35) came into the attack and immediately found a good length and in his second over, got Marsh (nine) out LBW.

When he got Johnson caught in close without scoring, Western Australia had fallen to 8-128.

Travis Birt helped Western Australia pass the follow-on mark, combining with debutant Jason Behrendorff (18*) for a 35-run ninth-wicket partnership.

Herrick was rewarded for a consistent day with the ball when he picked up Travis Birt for 63, digging in a short delivery that Birt played straight to David Hussey in the gully.

Warriors' number 11 Michael Hogan tested his eye, connecting with several huge swings of the bat during his 22-ball stay at the crease.

The last wicket partnership of 55, of which Hogan scored 41, brought some respectability back to Western Australia's score line who was dismissed for 218.

Play will continue tomorrow morning between the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers and Western Australia at the MCG.
