Victoria v Warriors - Champions League Twenty20 Review - September 13, 2010
WHAT HAPPENED: Points: Victoria 0 , Warriors 2
Victoria got their Champions League Twenty20 campaign off to a slow start, as they went down to South African side Warriors by 28 runs at Port Elizabeth. The win was set up by a superb solo batting effort from Warriors' Davey Jacobs, the opener smashing 59 off 38 deliveries in an 81-run opening partnership with Ashwell Prince.
Andrew McDonald was the pick of the bowlers for Victoria taking 2-22 from his four overs as well as getting the vital run out of Jacobs. With the bat Brad Hodge, Aaron Finch, David Hussey and McDonald all made starts but none could stick around long enough to propel the Vics to a competitive total. Hussey top-scored with 29 as Victoria finished on 9-130.
THE HERO: Davey Jacobs
There was no question Jacobs was the hero for the South Africans; the captain's knock set the tone for the rest of their innings and such was his importance that his dismissal for 59 sparked a mini collapse that could have cost Warriors the match. Jacobs hit nine fours and one six in his innings, adding to the 26 he made in the Warriors' first game against Wayamba. He didn't just do it with the bat either, as the skipper also took an acrobatic catch to remove dangerous Victorian opener Hodge.
THE VILLAIN: Shane Harwood
Victoria's veteran paceman had an evening to forget in Port Elizabeth, despite finishing the match with figures of 4-47 from his four overs. Harwood was punished by the Warriors' batsmen, particularly by Jacobs who hit 20 off one over early in the innings. Harwood did redeem himself slightly late on picking up the wicket of Colin Ingram.
DEFINING MOMENT: Maxwell dropped catch
They say catches win matches, and nowhere was this more true than at Port Elizabeth on Monday. After a poor start the Vics had worked their way back into the match with four quick wickets, bringing South African internationals Mark Boucher and Johan Botha to the crease. Boucher had hit 18 of 13 balls and was looking dangerous when he skied a pull shot to long on where Glenn Maxwell waited underneath. Boucher's dismissal would have put the Warriors further on the back foot, but Maxwell spilled a regulation chance as Boucher and Botha went on to produce a quick-fire 40-run partnership.
MILESTONES:
Davey Jacobs: Third Twenty20 half century
THE UPSHOT: Group leaders
The win leaves the Warriors undefeated after their first two matches and they are sitting pretty on top of Group A. It was a disappointing first-up effort from Victoria, and they will most likely need to beat Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings to have any chance of progressing.
WHERE TO NOW: Victoria will look to bounce back when they take on New Zealand's Central Districts at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. Warriors will be looking to make it three in a row when they face the Kiwis three days later, on Saturday in Port Elizabeth.
WHO SAID WHAT: Bushranger captain David Hussey
"We started slow, didn't we? We need to regroup and play our A game in Jo'burg. We didn't execute our skills well, but full credit to Warriors."
