A maiden One-Day five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in November signalled that McKay was primed to take the international scene by storm. Just as he should have been preparing for a limited-overs series against England, a stress fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot flared, prematurely ending his season.
The proven wicket-taker with an impressive strike rate, McKay was restricted to only five One-Day and three Shield matches for the Bushrangers. His best match came against Queensland in November when, opening the bowling, he took 4-91. Popular with the Bushrangers fans, McKay was chosen in the Aussie Fans XI to play against the ACA All Stars in an exhibition Twenty20 match.
An intelligent user of pace, notably his well-disguised slower balls, McKay has arguably the best One-Day record of any current Australian bowler. With 30 wickets in just 15 matches, at an average of 21.06, McKay was severely missed during the World Cup on the sub-continent.
