It took only one short, 27-ball knock, for Maxwell to announce himself to the cricket world. Eclipsing Australian legend David Hookes' domestic fastest-fifty record in the process, Maxwell's breathtaking innings catapulted him into the headlines.

Coming in at number eight, with the Bushrangers 6-157 chasing Tasmania's 258, Maxwell clubbed the ball to all parts of Bellerive Oval. By the time he departed for 61, Victoria was on the brink of one of its most memorable wins. The disappointment that he was dismissed and couldn't take the Bushrangers to victory was evident on Maxwell's face. A few Peter Siddle boundaries ensured that the heist was completed.

Though his whirlwind innings in Hobart grabbed all the attention, Maxwell's first Sheffield Shield century guaranteed he isn't pigeonholed as a T20 slogger. In just his second Shield match, and with Victoria in early trouble at 5-120, Maxwell stroked a run-a-ball hundred. Such was the ease in which Maxwell took to first-class level, he finished the season averaging 76 with a One-Day acceptable strike rate of 86.

Maxwell, who is renowned as one of the best fielders in the country, continued his development in the Emerging Players Tournament during the winter. He showed that he had lost none of his attacking intent, smashing a 46-ball century in the opening match.
