Handscomb represents the next wave in Victorian batsmen. His rookie contract will give him a chance to learn from top class Victorian batsmen David Hussey, Brad Hodge, Cameron White and Co.
The opening batsman in the Premier Team of the Season, Handscomb was also the third-highest run-scorer. Included in his 610 runs were two centuries, 110 against Essendon and 106 against Melbourne University. He also played in the Future Leagues last season, hitting two fifties in his five matches.
A top-order batsman, Handscomb has risen through the pathway system over the last few years. He originally came to notice of selectors in 2009 when he made a century in the Under-18 Commonwealth Bank Cup. Later that year he played in Under-19 tournaments for Victoria and Australia.
