The highlight of a bleak summer for Australian cricket fans was Peter Siddle's hat-trick on the opening day of the Ashes. The nation immediately fell in love with what Victorians had enjoyed for years, Siddle's fiery bowling, tireless work ethic and enthusiastic appealing - traits of fast bowlers from a bygone era.
A six wicket haul in the Boxing Day Test, in an otherwise listless Australian attack, cemented Siddle's place as an iconic Victorian.
Siddle's season started well in the Champions League Twenty20 when he was Victoria's most successful bowler. He continued this form into the Sheffield Shield where he had his best season since 2007-08. With 32 wickets at an average of 23.3, he was the state's best bowler and was aptly named in the ACA All Star Four-Day Team of the Year.
After a well earned break, Siddle spent the winter months training with Australian Rules Football team Carlton in Melbourne. In July he travelled to Zimbabwe with the Australia A side and with a packed international summer, Siddle's appearances for the Bushrangers may be limited in 2011-12.
